After battling a tough illness for the past 3 years, our Beloved brother, uncle, great-uncle, and godfather Paul Tak Chiu Cheung (張德潮) left us on Wednesday 22 September 2021. He was amazing and generous to all those who knew him and he will be greatly missed by all of us.
Paul came over to the UK in 1970 to study in Bristol before going up to Oxford Polytechnic. He found his joy of working in the Hospitality Management sector – being the Front of House Manager for a number of top restaurants in Torquay, Bristol, London, Kent and Harpenden. Then he set up his Thai restaurant and later a fish and chips shop with his long-term business partner and close friend Simon. Paul was named god-father by Simon and May – to their daughter, Chloe who he loved and cherished, and brought him much happiness.
Paul is one of 8 siblings who he loved dearly. Dotted around in UK - Peter (張德堅) and Catherine (張慕貞), in the USA was Dorothy (張鳳鳴), and Pauline (張鳳群), Alex (張德榮), Andy (張德昌) and Fanny (張鳳儀) in Hong Kong, he would connect with them one way or another. He loved all of his nieces and nephews, wherever they were and would try to stay in touch with all of them. Other extended members of family were from Canada and Singapore.
He loved his fast cars and would always consult with his brother and nephews on which ones he should go for next. His passion lay in sport, most of all: Formula 1 where he was treated to a special day out at Silverstone. He loved watching any sport, most probably football and would catch it on whichever channel were showing matches anywhere in the world. His favourite hobby was building model car kits and more enjoyably racing his model boats at Willen Lake in Milton Keynes.
He loved food, all types! Street-food, nouvelle cuisine, expensive food! He loved cooking and would always try to recreate his mother’s recipes. He would remember and say “it’s amazing how much you miss a certain type of food when it’s no longer there!” Bargain-hunting at the supermarkets or at open food markets would be entertaining to him. Music was also one of his favourite pastimes – listening to Chinese songs, English tunes, and of course songs from any number of Chinese Operas from a bygone age!
Paul would always be gracious and would always strike up a conversation with anyone, making them feel at home and would always do whatever he can to make them feel at ease. This would be true for his niece’s and nephew’s better halves. When his nieces and nephews came over to the UK – he would always make the time to spend with them, building strong relationships with each and every one.
He will always be known as the “Jelly-Bean Great-Uncle” to his very young great-nieces and great-nephew as well as “The Big Wallet” to his close family and friends due to his generosity for paying for anything at the very first opportunity!
